Raccoons Test Positive for Rabies in Wynantskill

Rensselaer County officials are warning residents in a Wynantskill neighborhood after two raccoons found there tested positive for rabies.

The animals were found in the Main Avenue and Hillcrest Avenue area, according to the county executive’s office. Residents are reminded to avoid contact with wild or stray animals, and keep all household pets up-to-date on rabies vaccinations.

Sick or rabid animals will display unusual behavior such as showing no fear of humans, wandering around during daylight, and wandering into residential areas, according to the county Health Department. Animals infected with the rabies virus typically show aggressive behavior toward humans and domesticated animals.

Rabies exposure can include a bite, scratch, or contact with the saliva of an infected animal. Any animal bites should be reported to county health officials. For more information on rabies prevention and what to do if you’re exposed to a potentially rabid animal, contact the county health department at 270-2655 or visit www.rensco.com/publichealth.asp.
