RECYCLING INFO

Why Recycle Electronics?  (from NYS DEC http://www.dec.ny.gov/chemical/66872.html#Why)

Industry experts estimate that U.S. consumers throw away 400 million units of electronic equipment per year. Recycling electronic waste protects human health and the environment by:

  • diverting thousands of pounds of waste from landfills and incinerators;
  • keeping toxins such as lead, mercury and cadmium from contaminating the air, water and soil; and
  • conserving natural resources by allowing valuable materials to be reclaimed and reused, rather than using virgin material.

TELEVISIONS –  JGS Recycling, 4 Center Ct. Troy, NY  does accept televisions with certain stipulations, and for a small charge in certain cases.  Contact them at 518- 225-8586 to discuss your television recycling needs.  This company is  NYS DEC and EPA certified.

BATTERIES, FLORESCENT LIGHT BULBS, PLASTIC BAGS – Home Depot recycles certain types of these products free of charge.  Call to ask if your item meets their criteria.

ELECTRONICS – Staples recycles cell phones, printers, and many computers free of charge – call in advance to discuss.

“GREENEST” STOREFRONT WINNERS: Jack’s and Millers Animal Hospital

Congratulations to Jack’s Hamburger Stand and Miller’s Animal Hospital winners of our greenest storefront contest for Main Ave and North Greenbush Road.  Runner up for Main Ave was Val’s Little Pal’s and for Rt. 4, Jiff-E-Mart.   We commend all our businesses small and large for all you do to make our town more beautiful and prosperous.  Honorable mentions:  WineSkill Discount Liquor , Benetech, Moscatiello’s Restaurant.

Winners received $150, and second place winners received gift cards as well thanks to our generous sponsors, Home Depot, Yonder Farms, Country True Value and Hewitt’s.

“This contest was initiated to try to inspire aesthetic improvements along Main Avenue and Route 4/North Greenbush Road by business owners with particular focus on rewarding small businesses for their efforts.  Despite Town Hall being an aged structure, we have taken great efforts to beautify the grounds over the past couple months, as well as public properties at the Town Beach and Twin Town Little League Fields, through planting of several flowers, shrubs and trees.  We take pride in our town and want its appearance to reflect that pride,” Supervisor Desso said.
